The Distance_Testing.tap file at the bottom of this article is a universal test file that can be used to test several functions of the machine such as router start/stop, the squareness of the X and Y axes, or loose connections along an axis. The file is set up with the X and Y zero being the center of the project and Z zero on the surface of the material. Below is a picture of the file laid out around the center start position and how the file will look when completed.
Material Size
X= 11.000, Y= 11.000, Z= 0.500
Z Origin for Material = Material Surface
XY Origin for Material = Center
Depth of Cut: 0.25"
Tool used in this file:
1/8" End Mill {0.125 inch}
Square Dimensions: 8" x 8"
Circle 2 Dimensions: 6" diameter
Circle 1 Dimensions: 3" diameter
Example Result:
The above result shows flat spots and misalignment at the top and bottoms of each circle. This means the y-axis is loose and needs to be tightened.
If the flat spots were on the left and right sides of the circles, this would indicate the x-axis is loose and needs to be tightened. See here for guides on checking the couplers.
