MDF (Medium-Density Fiberboard) is widely used but can be challenging to hold securely with vacuum due to its porous structure. Follow these steps to maximize holding power and avoid part shifting during machining or sanding.
Step-by-Step Guide
1. Prepare Your MDF Material
- Use clean, flat MDF – Avoid warped or rough-cut pieces.
- Seal the edges – MDF edges are very porous and leak vacuum:
- Apply masking tape, vinyl edge banding, or brush on a wood sealant (shellac or polyurethane).
- For small parts, seal the top and/or bottom surfaces if possible.
2. Inspect Your Vacuum Pod
- Make sure the gasket is intact and forms a full seal.
- Clean off dust or chips from the pod’s surface.
- If the MDF does not fully cover the gasket, block off the exposed area with another piece or tape.
3. Check Your Vacuum Pump
- Ensure your vacuum source is functioning properly and pulling a strong hold.
- Don’t rely on pressure alone—air leaks from MDF can weaken performance.
4. Set Up the MDF on the Pod
- Place the MDF squarely over the pod so the gasket is fully covered.
- Apply downward pressure to help the seal seat.
- Engage vacuum and wait 5–10 seconds to build full suction before cutting or sanding.
